Martyn is a Kelvin TopSet Lead Investigator and has undertaken numerous workplace root cause analysis investigations, including RIDDOR reportable accidents carried out under legal privilege.
Legionella management
Martyn has taken the role of ‘Legionella Responsible Person’ for a large UK power station and developed local, regional and global management procedures for the control of legionella.
He has set up an inspection and cleaning regime for cleaning a large cooling tower, which can be carried out in-situ without the requirement for shutting down the plant.
He has also developed a preservation process for the keeping the cooling tower safe during extended shutdowns. Martyn has investigated incidents involving positive legionella results and implemented appropriate control measures.
Emergency Response and Crisis Management
Martyn has developed Emergency Preparedness and Response Procedures and organised and ran emergency drills to test the effectiveness of the procedure.
Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH)
Martyn developed COSHH procedures and associated risk assessments as well as chemical delivery procedures for bulk tanker offloading. He developed a training programme for chemical offloading supervisors and ran emergency exercises to test the response in the event of a chemical incident. Martyn also introduced a chemical decontamination product (Diphoterine) to site for use in an event should workers came into conatct with corrosive chemicals.

Permit to work and isolation
Martyn was authorised to carry out permit to work training across a number of UK power stations. He has produced training videos for confined space authorisation and has audited safety rules systems and associated documentation including work permits.
Martyn has investigated incidents involving permit to work violations, for example, incorrect isolations being applied.
Work at height and falling objects
Martyn has developed and rolled out a ‘Stop the Drop’ Campaign at a large UK power station which was subsequently adopted at other plants. This included updates to the site induction, new posters and billboards, drop prevention equipment deployment , high level cleaning by rope access specialists and VI training (with 3D headsets), as well as pre-work checklist booklets.
Martyn also introduced a ladder safety campaign which involved purchasing improved equipment, tagging and inspections and improving training and competency.
Martyn has investigated workplace accidents and incidents involving dropped objects, falls from height and falls from ladders.
Slips, trips and falls
Martyn succesfully introduced an access upgrade programme for a large cooling tower to improve improve walkways, staircases, access platforms and internal inspection routes.
Martyn has developed a winterisation programme to reduce the risks of slips on an industrial site during icy weather. This incuded developing a new management procedure, setting up a formalised gritting contract, upgrading the specifictaions for PPE (footwear) and rolling out winter awareness e-learning to all staff.

Confined Space entry
Martyn developed a confined space entry procedure for a power generation company which resulted in the deployment of rescue teams for high risk activities along side additional training and purchase of new equipment.

Drug & Alcohol testing
Martyn has managed D&A testing programmes during power station outages carried out across the UK. This has included the selection of testing companies, development of D&A programmes and dealing with the outcomes of positive test results.
Environmental Permit Management
Martyn has successfully managed the environmental arrangements at a large UK Power station for over 20 years. During that period there has been no regulatory enforcement action resulting in fines or prosecutions by the Environment Agency.
He helped develop an Environmental Management System which ensured that all aspects and impacts were assessed and controlled to ISO14001 standards through a process of continuous improvement. Martyn has managed all environmental permits including IED and Greenhouse Gas permits as well trade effluent discharge agreements.
Martyn was the principal site contact at a UK Power station for CO2 monitoring and reporting under the UK Emissions Trading Scheme. This involved collating the emissions data, obtaining independent verification and submitting an annual emissions report to the EA via their on line portal.

Governance
HSE Management systems
Martyn developed a HSE Management system for a UK Power Station to meet ISO45001/14001 standards, becoming the first plant within the global fleet to achive certification. He was involved in annual certification audits to ensure any non-conformances were addressed.
In addition Martyn has developed many new Health, Safety and Environmental procedures at a local, regional and global level.
Construction Design Management Regulations (CDM)
Martyn has acted as Principle Designer for a number of major power plant outages which have involved multiple working parties carrying out construction-type activities at UK Power Plants. This involved co-ordinating health safety and environmental management during the pre-construction phase in order to minimise risks during the construction phase.
Outage Management (multiple working parties)
Martyn has acted on behalf of the Client and Principal Contractors in managing the HSE arrangements during the construction phase of major outages carried out a large UK power station. These involved hundreds of contractors carrying out high risk activities including hot work, confined space entry, work at height and lifting activities.

Safety Culture and behavioural safety
Martyn has helped to develop and roll out a safety programme for a large UK power generation company called ‘Safety@Heart’. Its purpose was to engage hearts and minds, reduce incidents, prevent life‑changing injuries, protect the environment, and safeguard critical assets. The roll out included a billboards, training sessions and a travelling roadshow to deliver the message to all UK locations.
